Activities
Cyclo-cross (CX) is a both a type of bicycling and a type of bike used in the discipline. Cyclo-cross races are held on a variety of terrain, similar to mountain bike racing, along with obstacles that necessitate a rider to dismount and run with their bike. Because the races typically consist of several laps of a smaller, roped-off course, they are generally more spectator friendly. Cyclo-cross has grown in popularity in the United States in recent years, though it has been in existence for over a hundred years. The first World Championships have been held since 1950. The sport had been used as a way to stay in shape for road racing - the cyclo-cross season usually takes place in the early fall through early winter - but the surge in popularity has begun to create athletes that specialize in the sport.
The cyclo-cross bike resembles a road bike with the drop handlebars and similar frame design. Cyclo-cross bikes have slightly wider tires than road bikes to provide better traction, and have knobbed tires. Brakes are either canti-levers or disc, similar to mountainbikes. The frame usually differs slightly by providing more clearance below the bottom bracket for going over obstacles.
